Get to Know DRP Junior Graphic Designer
Meet Yeanpu Nimely
What was your first job? What skills from that job do you use today?
My first job was working as an assistant graphic designer at the Virginia Beach City Courthouse during the summer of 2016. With this job, I learned how to use a Mac computer, instead of a PC, to do my graphic work. I also learned a lot about Illustrator and its tools since that was the main program created with.
What do you most enjoy about your job?
The variety of projects I get to work on on a daily basis. Some are fun and freeform, the others more serious and structured. It’s a good balance and I like having the opportunity to work with range.
Tell us about someone who has inspired you or helped you along the way? How has that person impacted your work today?
Aster Bagtas was my first mentor when I started graphic design. She inspired me to pursue graphic design more heavily and encouraged me to go to Virginia Commonwealth University for their graphic design program as she did when she graduated high school. She kept me motivated, gave me advice whenever I needed it, and inspired me to be just as great as her. I’m very thankful for meeting her and her good deeds do not go unnoticed!
What is something you wish you’d known before entering your line of work?
How hard it was to get a job after college! I feel like there’s so many designers in the world these days, everyone is on the hunt for the next company hiring. But I feel like since it is so hard, it pushes you to be more abstract and experimental with your work to stand out from the other people which I appreciate.
Why is this role perfect for you?
Ever since I was a little girl I told my mom I was going to be an artist in some way, shape, or form. I started off drawing and painting and somehow I made my way to graphics, which I’m so glad I did. I think it’s something I’ve grown to be good at. With graphic design, you can go so many fun routes and I’m grateful for the freedom that it brings!
