What was your first job? What skills from that job do you use today?
My first job was actually in early middle school, my dad would have me Q/A his company’s website for broken links and I would make a list and then watch/help him fix them. I’d say that was my first introduction to computer code and website functionality, which I definitely use today.
What do you most enjoy about your job?
I like that I can continue learning. Technology is changing so much that you just have to keep up, whether it’s a Shopify update or a fancy new email marketing platform...there’s always something to learn. I also like the variety of skills I get to use: One hour I’m designing, the next I’ll be showing a client how to use their site, and then I’ll be in the backend building the site. It’s more fun for someone like me who isn’t necessarily only design-focused.
Tell us about someone who has inspired you or helped you along the way? How has that person impacted your work today?
Would it be weird to say Deb? (I know it’ll come off like I’m sucking up 😂 ) I started at the company directly out of college as an intern. Back then it was Deb and I and a handful of outside resources, and since then we’ve grown into an actual company! Deb was the first designer I ever worked under and she’s the one who introduced me to Ecommerce, something that we didn’t touch in school. She was and still is patient with my learning pace and she allows me to explore new techniques that I don’t think would be tolerated in a larger corporate environment.
What is something you wish you’d known before entering your line of work?
I’m not really sure, it’s weird, because I entered the industry as such an inexperienced person that I’ve grown with the industry and the company. I guess when you start from a very low baseline anything you learn is good, right? 😂 Well I take that back, I wish I learned more code! I hate having to ask developers for help when it’s such a small thing! I’m learning.
